Stories of Hope

Victor, kidney recipient
In 2010, Victor sought medical attention when he noticed swelling in his feet. Tests brought the surprising news that Victor’s kidneys had never fully developed and were not properly filtering fluids. He immediately began dialysis three times a week, but it was not enough. Doctors informed Victor that he needed a kidney transplant to survive.
Victor was added to the national transplant waiting list in 2011, and he relied on the support of his family and friends to help him through the difficult time. In the spring of 2013, Victor got the important phone call he had been hoping for: a matching kidney had been donated.
Victor’s transplant surgery was a success. Today, he is healthy and back to work at a Rio Grande Valley television station. Through the experience, he also formed a bond with the fellow transplant center patient who received his donor’s second kidney, whom he calls his “kidney brother”. Above all else, Victor has come away with a deep appreciation for his donor’s gifts.
“I am so lucky to be alive, and to be given this second chance at life,” says Victor. “I am grateful to the person who donated their kidneys.”
Be socially responsible
95% of Americans are in favor of being a donor but only 58% are registered.
