How Your Name Can Save Lives

Donate Life America aims to increase donor registrations in new “Your Name Saves” integrated campaign

Richmond, VA – Nov. 29, 2016 – When someone registers as an organ, eye, and tissue donor, they can save and heal many lives. That’s why this Giving Tuesday, the Tuesday after Black Friday, Donate Life America, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, is urging people to give something unique—their name. Together with advertising agency Leo Burnett Chicago, the organization is launching “Your Name Saves,” an integrated campaign that highlights the names hidden within a person’s name as a metaphor for all of the lives one organ, eye, and tissue donor can save and heal. Individuals can see how many names are in their name at YourNameSaves.org, and then easily register to be a donor, turning the metaphor into a reality.

The facts are surprising: one person can save up to eight lives through organ donation, restore sight to two people through cornea donation, and heal up to 75 people through tissue donation. Yet despite the effect that one donor can have on so many lives, and the fact that 95% of Americans support organ donation, only 53% of Americans (18 years and older) are registered donors. Sadly, this means almost every hour, someone on the waiting list dies because an organ was not available in time.

“The opportunity to give is most powerful when it’s personal,” said David Fleming, President and CEO of Donate Life America. “Using an individual’s own name personalizes the appeal to save lives, and creatively illustrates that one person has the power to save and heal the lives of many.”

More than 120,000 Americans are currently on the national transplant waiting list. Every 10 minutes, a new individual is added. Traditionally, organ, eye and tissue donation registrations happen at the DMV. However, most people visit the DMV only once every four to twelve years. That’s why online campaigns like “Your Name Saves” are bringing registration opportunities to people wherever they are, on an everyday basis.

“Organ donation can feel a bit abstract and distant,” said Dave Loew, Executive Creative Director, EVP at Leo Burnett Worldwide. “By calling people by their very own name to register as a donor, the campaign makes organ donation immediate and personal. The power to save a life already exists within your name.

Celebrities will be giving and sharing their name to spread the word on social media and traditional media. The campaign will also be activated via partnerships with politicians, hospitals and schools in local communities. All campaign pieces invite people to visit, YourNameSaves.org, to type in any name and see the names hidden within it. For example, Elizabeth Williams includes the names Eli, Li, Liz, Eliza, Abe, Beth, Will, Lia, Liam, William and Tessa Maldonado includes the names Tes, Tess, Sam, Al, Aldo, Don and Dona. If connected with the person’s Facebook account, the website will highlight their friends’ names that are within their own and tag those friends on Facebook—showing how registering as a donor could someday even save those who are near and dear to them.

Individuals can register to be a donor directly on the YourNameSaves.org site and use Facebook information to automatically fill out most of the registration form. They can complete the rest of the form, press “submit”, and their name may literally save the lives of those waiting for a second chance at life.

The donor registration form on YourNameSaves.org, is part of the National Donate Life Registry, RegisterMe.org. The registration process is secure and easy. Individuals can access their donor registration record at RegisterMe.org at any time. The National Donate Life Registry is managed by Donate Life America.

Donate Life America Announces Winners of 2016 Pinnacle Awards

Affinity: Live Nation Partnership, Southwest Transplant Alliance

Donate Life Texas (DLT) and Southwest Transplant Alliance (STA) forged a partnership with music lovers at a well-known concert amphitheater through a sponsorship with Live Nation. This successful collaboration allowed STA to target their audience by selecting a variety of concerts to attend and engage in a proactive approach to community education about donation. 

Clinical Partners: Pennsylvania (PA) Association Community Health Center Challenge, Center for Organ Recovery and Education (CORE) and Gift of Life Donor Program

Community and rural health centers are viewed as the health experts in the communities they serve. In order to reach multicultural and underserved populations with information on donation, Pennsylvania’s Organ Procurement Organizations (CORE and The Gift of Life Donor Program), with support and guidance of the Pennsylvania Association of Community Health Centers (PACHC), developed a successful partnership with PA community health centers.

Events: The Gift of Life Poetry, Storytelling, Short Plays, New England Organ Bank

This project creatively and successfully made a donation connection with leaders in the African American Arts community in New Haven, CT, and gave a platform to personal donation stories that allowed audiences to witness donation from another’s perspective.

Miscellaneous: Legalizing the Donate Life Texas Mobile Scan App, Donate Life Texas

Through outreach and statewide organizing, Donate Life Texas (DLT) successfully achieved its three legislative agenda goals. DLT demonstrated collaborative and effective advocacy and outreach to help save lives through organ, eye and tissue donation.

Volunteers: Providing Hope, Offering Comfort: Donate Life No-Sew Comfort Blankets, Center for Donation & Transplant

The Donate Life blankets, made by volunteers, offer families comfort and support on-site at the hospital, allowing each family to know that they are not alone and are cared for, and that their loved one and their gifts will be honored and cherished by those who receive their donation.

Youth Education: Sign Up! Lunchtime Donation Drive on Campus, Sierra Donor Services

Recognizing statistics that suggest fewer teens are becoming licensed drivers at age 16, Sierra Donor Services created an alternative venue to join the donor registry and create a pro-donation culture on campus.

Best Remix: LGBT Outreach, Lifeline of Ohio

By participating in the local Pride parade, Lifeline of Ohio reached out to the LGBT community with the Donate Life message and information about how to register in the Ohio Donor Registry. The opportunity led to media opportunities, the opportunity to support the LGBT community and to educate about the difference between organ, tissue and blood donation guidelines.

Media and Innovation: Donate Life Hotspots—WiFi Sponsorship Program, Donate Life Maryland

This project was aimed at advancing a culture of donation and increasing registration rates in Maryland by offering DMV customers, especially mobile phone users, free Wi-Fi access through Donate Life Maryland sponsored hotspots in twenty-four DMV office locations. Wi-Fi service was branded with Donate Life ‘skins’ and directed individuals to a Donate Life Maryland donation TV spot on YouTube.

DMV and Platinum: Bells for Life, Donate Life South Carolina and South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles

In South Carolina, each time a customer says “Yes” to registering to be a donor and/or gives a monetary contribution to Donate Life South Carolina, the customer is given the opportunity to ring a bell. When the bell is rung, DMV staff claps in recognition and thanks for the customer helping save lives through organ, eye and tissue donation. The program uses a simple desk bell produced with the Donate Life brand colors of blue and green. One side of the bell is marked with the Donate Life logo and the opposite side is marked, “I said “YES”. This program has been adopted statewide with great success in increasing donor registration and financial support for Donate Life SC.

 

National Donor Sabbath Reaches Faith-Based Communities about the Importance of Donation

Initiative partners with faith leaders to educate about the critical need for donors

RICHMOND, November 11, 2016—National Donor Sabbath is observed annually, two weekends before Thanksgiving, from Friday through Sunday—in 2016, National Donor Sabbath is November 11-13. This three-day observance seeks to include the days of worship for major religions practiced in the United States. During National Donor Sabbath, faith leaders from many religions, with donor families, transplant recipients, and donation and transplantation professionals, participate in services and programs to educate the public about the need for donation and the importance of registering one’s decision to be an organ, eye and tissue donor.

All major religions in the U.S. support donation and believe it to be the ultimate act of love and generosity. For many people, faith plays an important role in the decision to register as a donor or consider living donation. With almost 120,000 men, women and children on the national transplant waiting list, registering to be a donor can provide hope to those desperately waiting for the gift of life.

Alison Mohn lost her son Ryan in a car crash. She has shared that, “so much good has come out of this tragedy. I believe that God works for all things good, and I see it. Just knowing that Ryan lives on through other people is comforting.” Ryan was able to save and heal the lives of more than 50 people through organ and tissue donation. Alison tells her story in her church and community, sharing the lifesaving benefits of donation and the pride that she has knowing that her son’s legacy is one of selflessness.

Samuel Shareef, a donor father, is rooted in the Islamic Faith. Samuel recognizes and believes that some things – like the opportunity to save a life – transcend religious dogma and rituals. Samuel’s words: “We chose and choose to Donate Life … not because it was the Muslim, Christian or Jewish thing to do. We choose to be an organ donation family because we believe it is the Human thing to do.”

Donate Life America Announces 2016 James S. Wolf, M.D., Courage Award Winner

RICHMOND, November 1, 2016 – Last week, Donate Life America (DLA), a national non-profit organization committed to increasing the number of donated organs, eyes and tissue available to save and heal lives, presented Imam Johari Abdul-Malik, with the James S. Wolf, M.D., Courage Award at DLA’s annual meeting in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The James S. Wolf, M.D., Courage Award is named in honor of the transplant surgeon pioneer who founded the Coalition on Donation (now Donate Life America). The award is presented annually to an individual outside the professional donation and transplantation community, who has: played a significant national role in helping to educate the public about organ, eye and tissue donation and promoting donor registration; expressed personal commitment and enthusiasm in educating the public; sought to reach audiences on a national level; and demonstrated the ‘service above self’ attitude in their mission.

The Washington, D.C. metropolitan region has the highest concentration of newly entered Muslims in the U.S. When given with the option of donation, the overwhelming majority of family members who self-identified as Muslim, did not authorize donation on behalf of their deceased loved one. The singular reason that was given: “It’s against my religion.” Similarly, these case reviews also revealed that none of these deceased Muslim individuals was a registered organ, eye and tissue donor. Washington Regional Transplant Community’s (WRTC) Community Affairs team needed to launch a highly strategic public education and community outreach initiative designed to educate those of the Islamic faith that organ donation is permitted in their religion. WRTC needed a partner, an advocate and a leader in the Islamic community. Imam Johari Abdul-Malik is the outreach director at the Dar Al-Hijrah Islamic Center in Northern Virginia, one of the largest Islamic Centers in North America. He has a Master’s degree in Genetics and Human Genetics, is currently completing his PhD course work in Bioethics at Georgetown University’s Kennedy Center for Ethics, and is a passionate advocate for organ, eye and tissue donation.

In 2015, Imam Johari agreed to partner with WRTC in its efforts to educate those of the Islamic faith that organ donation is allowed by their religion, and they are empowered to give the gift of life. His partnership has been exclusively on a volunteer basis without any form of compensation—and it has had an incredible effect:

  • In 2015, through his contacts at the Islamic Medical Association of North America (IMANA), he secured a 60-minute panel presentation on organ donation at the Islamic Society of North America’s (ISNA) Annual Convention. This Convention attracts almost 50,000 people and is the largest gathering of Muslims in the country.
  • In 2016 he facilitated a critically important meeting between WRTC and the International Institute Islamic of Thought (IIIT), the preeminent Muslim think tank in the country. It was at this meeting that IIIT agreed that the topic of organ donation, and the myths and misconceptions around it within the Muslim community, needed to be discussed among Islamic experts.
  • On July 20th, 2016, Imam Johari, WRTC and IIIT hosted a national Fiqh Forum titled, Reaching Consensus on Organ Donation: A Call to the American Muslim Community where national leaders in Islamic religion and law joined national leaders in the donation community of practice including AOPO*, AMAT*, DLA*, HRSA*, MOTTEP*, UNOS* and WRTC*.
  • Executive Members of the Fiqh Council of North America also attended the Forum and agreed to examine and review this matter to decide if they will issue a fatwa to American Muslims that communicates permissibility of organ donation.
  • Two moths later, The Fiqh Council of North America met during this year’s ISNA Convention and reached a consensus that the Council will be issuing a fatwa to American Muslims in support of, and permissibility for, organ eye and tissue donation. Further announcements and promotion of this development are forthcoming.

Astellas and Donate Life America Attempt to Achieve GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ Title for Organ Donor Registrations

NORTHBROOK, Ill. and RICHMOND, Va., Oct. 27, 2016 /PRNewswire/ — At any given moment in America, there are more than 120,000 men, women and children awaiting lifesaving organ transplantsi. To bring greater focus to the critical importance of organ donation, Astellas and Donate Life America will attempt to break the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title for online organ donor registrations in an eight-hour period from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Central Daylight Time (CDT) on Saturday, Nov. 5. The record-breaking attempt will take place during the Astellas-sponsored New Zealand All Blacks and Irish Rugby Football Union match at Chicago’s Soldier Field.
